Helmut Schmidt University is one of two universities of the German Armed Forces. With its outstanding research and teaching, the university is also a scientific partner of the federal government and is positioned in the international research landscape through competitive basic and applied research. The quality of its teaching stems from the independent research activities of its academic members.
Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg manages its own academic affairs and thus maintains its academic independence as an institution of the Bundeswehr. It is a campus university in the growing metropolitan region of Hamburg. It is a place where gender equality and diversity are practised. It pays particular attention to the promotion of young academics. Its modern administration supports academics in research and teaching as well as in self-administration and actively faces up to the challenges of digital change.
The university has close links with other universities, non-university research institutions and the metropolitan region and is involved in two of Hamburg’s four clusters of excellence and the PIER PLUS initiative. As part of a partnership with the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, it is the scientific director of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI). With its share in the “Digitalization and Technology Research Center of the Federal Armed Forces” (dtec.bw), the university conducts interdisciplinary research and development in key digitalisation technologies in cooperation with partners from business and society as a federal science campus.
In 2023, the university was awarded the certificate for participation in the HRK compact audit “Internationalisierung der Hochschulen”. It is thus further establishing itself as an internationally oriented academic partner. It is a place of lived diversity of lifestyles and family forms and has been participating in the “family-friendly university” audit since 2023.
