Situated in La Spezia, Italy, the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is a world-class NATO scientific research facility with over 60 years of expertise.

Our team of NATO scientists is dedicated to advancing maritime research and technology, developing innovative solutions that enhance safety and address the defence needs of the Alliance. CMRE is unique in operating NATO’s only research vessels, enabling us to conduct extensive experiments from the Mediterranean to the Arctic.

We focus on vital areas such as artificial intelligence, underwater acoustics, and pressing challenges like climate change and the protection of critical undersea infrastructure. Under the leadership of Dr. Eric Pouliquen, CMRE serves as a collaborative hub for scientists from all NATO nations, strengthening the maritime capabilities of the Alliance.
