A Professorship in Classical Archaeology is to be filled at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel beginning on February 1, 2027, or by appointment with the successful applicant.

Depending on the qualifications of the person to be appointed, the appointment will be made at the level of Tenure Track Assistant Professor (TTAP), Associate Professor or Full Professor.

  • We are looking for a scholar who will represent Classical Archaeology with a compatible and forward-looking research profile and who can comprehensively cover the teaching requirements in Classical Archaeology, offering teaching at the level of BA, MA and doctoral studies.
  • They will contribute to the development of the integrated degree programme of the Department of Ancient Civilisations as well as to interdisciplinary cooperations, both in teaching and research, with other disciplines at the Department.
  • They will coordinate the course curriculum in Classical Archaeology with the other Professorships in the Department of Ancient Civilizations as well as the Professorship for Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science (Integrative Prähistorische und Naturwissenschaftliche Archäologie, IPNA) in the Department of Environmental Sciences.

  • Applicants must have an excellent doctorate and an excellent record in research and publications, according to their academic age.
  • The focus of their research should be compatible with the research profile of the Department of Ancient Civilisations. 
  • They are expected to have teaching experience and to be keen to teach undergraduate and doctoral students in innovative and practice-oriented formats, including with the use of digital tools.
  • They will have a track record in securing third-party funding.
  • The ability to work in a team and a willingness to contribute to university self-governance are essential.

  • Modern and family-friendly working conditions in the center of Basel as well as cooperation with highly motivated scholars.
