Educational and scientific objectives:
Teaching aimed at students of the last two years of bachelor in Biomedical Sciences. The objective is to teach the fundamentals of cell biology in its molecular aspects as well as the understanding of the basic mechanisms of cell biology in relation to human pathologies.
Cellular and molecular biology: The student will be able to describe the structure of the main organelles and structural components of a eukaryotic cell, to describe their different functions and the classes of proteins involved in these functions. He will also be able to describe the structure of the main biological molecules (DNA, RNA, proteins) and understand the steps of their synthesis. It will be able to establish the functional link between them and will include the bases of gene expression as well as the structure and regulation of the synthesis of these different compounds.
Exploration of intracellular transport, organelle dynamics, cell trafficking, cytoskeleton and signalling in the context of complex cellular behaviours, such as mitosis, cell adhesion, cell motility and polarity will allow the student to master the concepts of regulation of these processes at the molecular level. The exploration of these matters will create opportunities to address the fundamental mechanisms of human diseases in which these processes are lacking: degeneration and tissue regeneration, congenital malformations, etc. The teaching will be given in a scientific research orientation that allows students to deepen the molecular mechanics of these processes.
Basic Cell Biology: Biological Membranes and Cell Compartments – Small Molecule Transport – Intracellular sorting and Protein Trafficking – Intracellular Membrane Traffic – Nuclear Transport – The Cytoskeleton – Cell Division - Extracellular matrix and intercellular contacts - Mitochondria – Epithelia.
Basic molecular biology: DNA structure – histones – chromatin – genome and chromosomes – recombination and DNA repair – transcription – RNA and its metabolism – different types of RNA – gene expression (pro- and eukaryote) – splicing – genetic code – translation.
Cell signaling bases (receptor/ligand – kinases-G protein – channels)- Molecular bases of cell interaction (adhesion, migration) – Molecular clock and cell cycle – oncogene concept – cell death and link with cellular signaling – 2D and 3D cultured cell models – Analyzing cells in tissues (polarity, mechanosensing, regeneration) – links of these processes with human pathology
Research area: The selected candidate will have the opportunity to conduct his research in one of the laboratories of the Faculty of Medicine according to his interests. He is advised to contact the laboratories in order to consider his future position and the collaborations he would like to set up with the teams.
