Duties

Research

  • You have demonstrated expertise and skills in the (professional) practice of Interior Architecture. The practice you (co-)develop testifies of inventive design and innovative approaches compared to the current state-of-the-art and might have an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary character.
  • You can demonstrate that you, as designer, have a strong affinity and passion for the following aspects and trends related to Interior Architecture:
  • In Interior Architecture, there is a growing interest in the performative aspects of the interior, i.e. in the way in which designs intervene in social events. Through these aspects, the interior and its direct critical dialogue with the physical, social and cultural environment are explored. It couples this with a thoroughgoing interest in, and questioning of, the social engagement of the interior architect. How can the interior architect use the specifics of their personal environment in a design-based way to reinforce the social significance of their project and hence contribute to critical entrepreneurship?
  • The urban space is in current times increasingly problematised. The specific craftsmanship of interior architecture can be of strategic importance to increase the domestic quality of the urban environment while also realising ecological gains and warrant the socio-ecological quality of inhabitation in densely built up areas. The profile focuses on exploring the potential of small scale design of (outside - public) interiors, intelligent furnitures (acting as social and ecological sensors) and punctual interventions to improve living conditions in a context of sustainable urbanism.
  • The research should connect with ongoing research programmes.
  • You set up collaborations within and outside the department.
  • You support national and international collaborations of the research group/section and you help to promote and develop them. You will also actively participate in the development of future research projects of the group/section.
  • You publish and generate scientific output (including ADRO - Artistic and Design-led Research Output) at the relevant scientific level within the field of Interior Architecture, acquire resources for fundamental and/or applied research, build (international) cooperation. You are involved in, facilitate and stimulate PhDs with a design focus, as a supervisor or as a member of the supervisory committee. Your research contributes to the development of the characteristics and the further strengthening and anchoring of design-based, artistic and practice-based research at the Department of Architecture and is based on the development of a critical academic (design) practice linked to innovative learning environments.

Teaching

  • You provide high-quality teaching within the field of design in Interior Architecture with a clear commitment to the quality of the educational programme as a whole. You will also contribute to the teaching project of the faculty/university by supervising master's theses and as supervisor of doctoral students.
  • You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven’s vision on activating and research-based education and make use of the professional and educational resources offered by the faculty and the university.
  • Your teaching assignment is determined in consultation on the basis of your specific profile. In doing so, the faculty pays great attention to the balance between research, teaching and (internal) service time.
  • The focus of the teaching is on the design studios in Interior Architecture (Bachelor/Master).

Service

  • Scientific, social and internal service are also part of your assignment.
  • You maintain close contact with the (professional) practice of Interior Architecture nationally and internationally and include it in your research and teaching.
  • It is highly recommended if you yourself are an active part of a (professional) practice in Interior Architecture.

Profile

  • You hold a Master's degree in Interior Architecture or its equivalent, and a design-driven PhD whose topic is related to the research and education field.
  • You have a strong research record in the field of Interior Architecture linked to a practice in interior architecture with a clear research character. The research quality is demonstrated by ADROs (Artistic and Design-related Research Output), publications in leading/international journals, and international research and/or practice experience. Your CV/portfolio shows an active link with Interior Architecture and demonstrates this in particular through realised ADROs.
  • You have demonstrable qualities for academic teaching. You have extensive experience of the design studio working format as a learning environment.
  • You have organisational skills and a collegial attitude. You also possess leadership skills in a university context.
  • A good knowledge of English is a requirement. KU Leuven offers courses in academic English.
  • The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you are not fluent in Dutch at the start of your employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.
  • Before teaching a class assignment in Dutch, you will be given the opportunity to acquire the knowledge of Dutch required for this purpose.
