Professorship

Gas Turbines and Aircraft Propulsion (W3)

(Code. No. T277-2024)

About TU Darmstadt

TU Darmstadt stands for excellent and relevant science. We are playing a decisive role in shaping the farreaching processes of global change – from the energy transition to artificial intelligence – through outstanding scientific knowledge and innovative academic programmes. We group our cutting-edge research into three fields: Energy and Environment, Information and Intelligence, Matter and Materials. We are a university with strong ties to the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region and a very strong international focus. We are committed to European values and European integration.

About our department

With its wide variety of topics and methods, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU Darmstadt makes relevant contributions to the design of socio-technical systems. We use our talents and skills to promote sustainable development.

Equal treatment and respect are important to us. We are internationally networked and want to offer every researcher the best opportunities for development, regardless of their background. We strive to attract the best minds for our research. We therefore see diversity and different areas of experience as an opportunity.

The professorship “Gas Turbines and Aircraft Propulsion” aims to contribute to the development of sustainable propulsion systems for aircraft and new technologies for energy conversion systems through basic and application-oriented research and to represent these in teaching. The professorship is an important component of the sustainability strategy of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, promotes the attractiveness of the courses offered in the department's degree programs and is a main pillar of the English-language master program in Aerospace Engineering.

Your Tasks

We expect the future job holder to conduct research in the field of thermal turbomachinery and develop technologies for future use in a de-fossilized energy system. The research activities will focus on sustainable stationary gas turbines in power engineering as well as innovative propulsion systems in aviation and their holistic system integration. An attractive, modern experimental infrastructure is available for this purpose. The experimental research activities can be accompanied by numerical simulations. Collaboration with national and international industrial partners in both aeronautics and energy technology is strongly desired and should be further expanded.

We expect the future holder of the position to actively acquire third party funding and to participate in national and international collaborative research at TU Darmstadt together with colleagues from different departments. The incumbent is expected to participate in the teaching of the bachelor and master programs of the Department of Mechanical Engineering as well as in interdepartmental programs. We expect active participation in the new English-language master program in Aerospace Engineering.

Your profile

We are looking for a scientifically qualified research personality with proven systems expertise in aircraft engines or stationary gas turbines. A university degree in engineering or natural sciences followed by a qualified doctorate, as well as didactic and pedagogical skills and a willingness to participate in academic self-administration are required. A habilitation or equivalent qualification is required.

As part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, Technical University of Darmstadt and its surroundings are characterized by living internationality. The core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and, at the latest after three years, good German language skills are expected.

The position includes a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German “W-Besoldung”, and is subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate. Further requirements for employment are based on § 67 and § 68 HessHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz).
