Welcome to Linnaeus University
Where knowledge grows.
We are an international university in Småland, Sweden. Together we set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development.
The Faculty of Technology offers a broad spectrum of activities across nine different departments and is central to the technical education and research conducted at Linnaeus University. The Department of Forest and Wood Technology offers wide-ranging thematic activities from the forest seedling to the finished wood product. Benefits for the climate arising from forests lie at the centre of all department activities. Based on this theme, the department meets societal challenges whilst contributing to two of the Linnaeus Knowledge Environments: Green sustainable development and Advanced materials.
Field of subject for the position: Postdoc fellowship in Starch-based Adhesives for Wood Panels
Placement: Växjö, Sweden.
Extent and period: The position is available as soon as possible, for duration of 1 year. Extent is 100%.
The work involves research on starch modification, preparation and evaluation of adhesives, and validation of the adhesives in wood panel making. Such adhesives could enable a better recycling of wood-based board materials where the main alternative today is for combustion.
Increasing consumer awareness, legal requirements and alarming climate change require innovative advancements in the wood panel production. This is to be able to reduce fossil dependence, greenhouse gas emissions and negative health effects of formaldehyde used in current adhesive systems. Abundant renewable raw materials such as starch could be alternatives, as has been shown by previous research
Economically viable and environmental-friendly adhesives based on starch are expected to increase the marketability and sustainability of furniture products. The project aims at addressing all technical, market and sustainability challenges for applying starch-based adhesives in the contemporary wood based panel production. The industry has a central role in the process for implementing the developed concepts.
