We invite applications for a postdoctoral fellowship (3 years) in the framework of the FWO-WEAVE project ‘Aristotle on Soul and Senses: Exchanges between Latin and Greek Transmissions of De anima and De sensu’, carried out in collaboration between KU Leuven and the University of Tübingen (Germany). The PI’s of the project are Lisa Devriese (KU Leuven), Pieter Beullens (KU Leuven), and Klaus Corcilius (Tübingen).
The project examines the medieval Latin translations of Aristotle’s De anima and De sensu, their Greek sources, and the dynamic exchanges between both traditions. The successful candidate will prepare a critical edition of the Latin translation of De sensu, in close collaboration with the team in Leuven and with the parallel postdoctoral researcher based in Tübingen, who will work on the critical edition of the Latin translation of De anima.
Applicants are warmly encouraged to apply both for this position at KU Leuven and for the parallel postdoctoral position at the University of Tübingen. Both researchers will work in very close partnership, sharing data and methods, and attend regular joint workshops.
This editorial project is embedded in several projects: the ERC Starting Grant FitMA at KU Leuven, the ERC Advanced Grant TIDA at Universität Tübingen, and the international project Aristoteles Latinus at KU Leuven.

Responsibilities

The selected applicant will conduct independent research as members of the EXDADS-team and within the aims of the project. The selected applicant will be expected to participate in the organization of common activities related to the project, such as team meetings, presentations, and conferences, and in the research activities of the De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, in which the project is embedded. The selected candidate will also work in close collaboration with the partner postdoctoral fellow in Tübingen.

Profile

The candidate has
• a PhD degree in Arts, Philosophy, or another relevant subject, concluded with excellent results (or will have it before the start of the employment), and meet the requirements for recruitment as a postdoctoral fellow
• good command of academic English
• excellent knowledge of Latin and ancient Greek
• acquaintance with Latin and Greek medieval palaeography is an advantage
• experience in critical editing of (medieval) Latin texts is an advantage
The candidates are
• prepared to develop further expertise in ancient and medieval philosophy
• motivated to contribute to the overall goals of the project in close cooperation with the other team members and partner teams. For that purpose, the candidate is prepared to conduct their research at the partner institution in Tübingen for up to three months.

Offer

The successful candidate will be employed at KU Leuven under the standard conditions, and will work at the Institute of Philosophy under its postdoctoral policy. The fellowship provides for training opportunities, social and health benefits, and office space. Remote working is possible within the rules of KU Leuven insofar as it does not interfere with the necessities of functioning as a team member.
