In a joint effort, Prof. Tim Claeys (KU Leuven), Prof. Eric P. Simon (Université de Lille) & Prof Liesbet Van der Perre (KU Leuven) are pushing the boundaries on resilient 6G and future generation cellular networks. In the research groups of these professors, researchers explore various topics related to communication technology.

Project

Within this joint PhD project between KU Leuven and Université de Lille, we will analyze and research mitigation methods to reduce the impact of jamming attacks on cell free massive MIMO in order to maintain robust and secure communication networks for mission- and safety-critical applications.

Cell-free massive MIMO represents a significant breakthrough in sixth-generation wireless communication technology. Unlike traditional cellular networks, which divide coverage areas into cells, cell-free MIMO eliminates this concept. In a cell-free context, numerous access points (APs) are strategically distributed across a wide geographic area to serve all users optimally. These APs connect to a central processing unit (CPU) via wired or wireless backhaul links. Cell-free massive MIMO builds upon the 5G technique of massive MIMO, utilizing a large number of co-located antennas distributed throughout the entire area. This approach enhances coverage uniformity and connectivity by leveraging the proximity and diversity of APs. Notably, cell-free technology has promising applications in for example connected vehicles for future transportation systems, where safety is paramount. Efforts to enhance the robustness and reliability of cell-free networks are crucial, especially in the face of jamming-type attacks.

In this specific PhD you will combine theoretical analyses, computer simulations using measured channel state information and implementations on a test-bed in order to reach the goal of jamming resilient cell-free massive MIMO networks.
