- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Welcome to an internationally leading research environment in epidemiology at the department of Medicine Solna, Karolinska Institutet (KI). Here you may develop your research in chronic inflammatory diseases.

The Department of Medicine, Solna (MedS) has well-established and robust educational and research profiles in biomedicine and clinical medicine at a high international level. The Division of Clinical Epidemiology (KEP) at MedS brings together clinical, epidemiological, and biostatistical expertise with the aim of improving the treatment of a broad range of medical conditions, including chronic inflammatory diseases. At KEP, translational, clinical, and epidemiological research is conducted to enhance our understanding of the origins of various diseases and to increase our ability to predict disease onset and prognosis. The research aims to improve healthcare and clinical practice by     questions related to the risks and effects associated with different treatments. KEP is also involved in Clinicum at  Institutet, a broad initiative to support and strengthen the methodological competence of researchers at KI and Region Stockholm, and in research education via the KI /Region Stockholm research school in epidemiology for clinicians.

Description of the subject area

At Karolinska Institutet, internationally leading clinical research in the field of chronic inflammatory diseases is conducted, particularly with regard to rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The affected patient populations are large, and once these diseases have developed, the conditions remain lifelong. However, significant progress has been made in recent years regarding early diagnosis and more effective treatments with fewer side effects. We now know that it is possible to influence the course of these diseases, improving patients' quality of life and work capacity while reducing comorbidities and late effects such as disability, cardiovascular disease, malignancy, and premature death. Swedish health registers and new epidemiological methodologies have been crucial for these advancements. Karolinska Institutet has been nationally and internationally leading in both research studies and the strategic development of the field, particularly when clinical data (from clinical research) and biomarker data (from translational research) have been combined (within the framework of observational research) with new analytical methods (including data-driven approaches tailored to the field and research questions).

The purpose of the current position is to ensure the continuation and further development of the research field, both in terms of data sources and epidemiological analysis, and in terms of collaboration between epidemiological, translational, and clinical inflammation research at Karolinska Institutet within the disease areas where the institute currently holds a clearly leading national and international role, encompassing data ranging from molecular to animal models and clinical studies, such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

Your mission

You are expected to conduct independent research in the area of chronic inflammation, for example, within rheumatology or neurology, and work with epidemiological and clinically oriented research methodology including studies of intervention within the field.

You are expected to contribute to the research education at KEP, at MedS at large, and to contribute to the research education within the Karolinska Institutet - Region Stockholm research school in epidemiology for clinicians.

You are expected to collaborate with researchers within the field of inflammation research (at KI well as outside KI) towards a strategic development of the research field at large.

You are also expected to actively engage with the surrounding community, such as Region Stockholm and other Swedish data holders, in research-supporting and developmental initiatives relevant to the field (e.g., Clinicum).

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise, and excellent scientific expertise.

The position is focused on chronic inflammatory diseases. You should have a research profile oriented towards chronic inflammatory diseases within rheumatology or neurology.

We are looking for an established researcher with an epidemiological research profile, documented through number and quality of publications in international journals during the most recent years. Du should also, as main applicant, have received national or international research grants within the field of research, in open competition, and have the potential to secure further research grants within the area.

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, or have gained equivalent competence, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The position is focused on research. For this appointment, the weighting of qualifications will be as follows: scientific expertise (3), teaching expertise (2), and leadership, development, and collaboration skills (2).

When appointing a lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria outlined in the instructions for the appointment procedure apply, in relation to the established job profile.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • a postgraduate education in medical science with a focus on biostatistics/epidemiology or equivalent.
  • acquisition of research grants in national or international competition, for research in the field
  • research activities addressing both etiological as well as clinical field-specific questions
  • activities focused on relevant methodological development within the field, such as developing access to new health data sources and adaption of new analytical methods to these.
  • experience from research based on data from national health data registries and/or other healthcare administrative systems.
  • experience in collaboration and developmental activities, such as of research infrastructure, between various stakeholders (academia, healthcare, industry, and other stakeholders).
  • extensive teaching experience within methodology and analysis relevant to the field
  • leadership and collaboration skills including leadership for a team or a group
  • ability to communicate fluently in spoken and written English and Swedish.

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • experience in research on neurological and rheumatological inflammatory diseases
  • experience working with health data from additional countries than Sweden.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
