Postdoctoral Position: Interdisciplinary coordination of "Storylines of climate extreme events"

We invite applications for an interdisciplinary coordination position on climate adaptation to extreme events under the supervision of Prof. Sonia I. Seneviratne and Prof. David Bresch (ETH Zurich). The position will be part of the NCCR CLIM+ programme (www.nccr-climplus.ch) and the NCCR CLIM+ Management Center at ETH Zurich.

Project background

NCCR CLIM+ supports Switzerland in the transformation towards a climate-resilient society. Together with stakeholders, the interdisciplinary NCCR CLIM+ research community tackles unexplored solution spaces to the climate crisis and develops a blueprint for actionable climate research worldwide. NCCR CLIM+ broadly communicates and shares knowledge and trains a new generation of experts with the necessary domain and transdisciplinary knowledge.

Job description

In NCCR CLIM+, storylines are used to work inter- and transdisciplinarily to develop (adaptation and mitigation) solutions to changes in climate extremes. While individual storylines target adaptation to a specific type of extreme event, it is important to ensure the exchange of inter- and transdisciplinary learnings across storylines.

We seek a researcher to support the coordination and integration across several storylines (Financial stability and supply chains; Heat and health; Climate tipping points and abrupt changes). In this role, you will be a natural science and inter-/transdisciplinary research expert in a team with natural scientists, social scientists and transdisciplinary researchers and you will support the choice of methods for science and transdisciplinary integration.

You will be part of the NCCR CLIM+ programme and benefit from its extensive exchange and training in inter- and transdisciplinary research. You will publish your results in scientific journals and present them at national and international conferences.

The first phase of this position is planned for a duration of 3.5 years, starting on November 1 2026 or upon agreement. The contract term is one year at a time, with the option of renewal. The salary follows ETH Zurich regulations. A part-time employment (e.g. 80%) can be considered in cases of child- or family care, or other projects or employment.

Profile

You hold a PhD degree in climate science, environmental sciences, meteorology, or a closely related field. You have experience in either inter- or transdisciplinary research and are keen to fully engage in both. You are motivated to co-develop the necessary tools and platforms for exchange. Experience with climate modeling and the processing of climate model data, climate attribution and climate projections, as well as with financial and health impacts of climate change, and/or global climate tipping points is an asset. We encourage applications from enthusiastic and dedicated individuals with very good oral and written English communication skills. Command of one of the Swiss national languages is desired. The position can be filled at junior or senior postdoctoral level. This position is particularly attractive for postdoctoral researchers aiming for a career at the interface between climate science, policy and society, and who wish to take on coordination responsibilities.

We offer

  • A job with impact: NCCR CLIM+ supports your professional development and contributes to positive change in society
  • Flexible working conditions in an inspiring, international research environment
  • Varied tasks at the interface of science, policy and society
  • An engaged and supportive team
  • Conferences, workshops and training opportunities
  • Opportunities to expand your network and gain valuable experience in academic leadership and project development
