Introduction

Photonics is widely regarded as the key enabling technology of the 21st century. Its applications and use in many scientific and industrial fields are accelerated through Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), which combine many optical components into a miniaturized chip format. Similar to electronic ICs, PICs are revolutionizing areas such as healthcare, communication, sensing, and have the potential to be disruptive to the whole society. We at TU/e are at the center of photonics, working across material science, device integration technologies, and systems and applications. The TU/e, together with TNO, University of Twente, and PhotonDelta created a Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC). The PITC works in tight collaboration with industry, providing optimum development R&D pathways, maximizing the output, and enabling accelerated industrial adoption of photonic technologies.

Job Description

The Photonic Pilot line

The PIXEurope pilot line, as a part of the EU Chips Act aims to develop and accelerate industrial adoption of photonic technologies. This initiative, executed by a pan-European network of some of the strongest research and technology organizations, will result in significant market disruption, enable the launch of new and affordable products powered by photonics. Including optical engines for energy efficient AI data centers, high-speed communication devices for future optical networks, biosensors for point-of-care patient monitoring, compact medical devices such as minimally invasive surgical and imaging systems. sensors for rapid and precise food safety and quality monitoring and in-line process control; miniaturized energy-efficient sensors for mobile networks, the Internet-of-Things and autonomous vehicles; high-speed quantum computing devices and augmented and virtual reality systems. Key to the successful deployment of photonic solutions for these application areas is the development of scalable, high throughput test and reliability processes and systems. You will be engaged in applied research and electronic-photonic test development activities in the course of PITC Metrology program, and working with the PIXEurope European consortium consisting of industry and research institutes in the field of integrated photonics.

Responsibilities

  • Define optical and electrical test specifications
  • Define design specifications for wafer-level optical and electrical tests
  • Characterize and validate the performance of test solutions using validation demonstrators.
  • Collect all tests design and process parameters to develop packaging process design kit (PDK)
  • Prepare electronic-photonic tests protocols for next generation manufacturing of photonic integrated circuits
  • Develop, maintain and extend test data management systems
  • Operate and maintain electronic-photonic test systems
  • Contribute to the development of standards for photonics
  • Contribute with Principal Investigators to ongoing projects and proposal submission
  • Work in the cleanroom based laboratories, in adherence to the protocols.
  • Create and maintain test laboratory protocols
  • Analyze, present, and report on the outcomes and progress internally and to the consortium partners

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in applied physics, electrical engineering, or in an equivalent field with a strong background in photonics, programming and process automation.
  • Experience in semiconductor measurements and manufacturing, reliability of semiconductor devices, and photonic laboratory would be of an advantage.
  • Due to the nature of the work the position is on-site
  • Ability to work in semiconductor cleanroom-conditions.
  • Due to the collaborations with partners in this position, a valid Certificate of Conduct (Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag, VOG) is required to start at this position. For more information see: https://www.justis.nl/en/products/certificate-of-conduct.

If you are concerned that you don’t meet all the requirements sufficiently, but the job does excite you, then be sure to respond, we would love to look at your profile.
