The University of Wuppertal is a modern, dynamic and research-oriented campus university with an interdisciplinary profile in research and teaching. Collectively, more than 26,000 researchers, academic staff and students face the challenges of society, culture, education, economics, technology, nature and the environment.

The School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

Tenure Track Assistant Professorship
(W 1 – tenure W 2) for Experimental Physics (according to § 36 HG NRW)

The position should be filled as soon as possible.

We are looking for an outstanding researcher in an early phase of the academic career, who is an acknowledged expert in the physics of condensed matter, in particular in the field of quantum materials.

Duties and requirements

  • Experimental measurement methods can either be laboratory-based (e.g. scanning probe methods, thermodynamic probes, electron spectroscopy, optical probes) or rely on large-scale facility research (e.g. neutron or synchrotron radiation sources). Possible research directions may include, but are not restricted to quantum magnetism, topological states, and electron systems.
  • The future holder of the position is expected to topically complement the existing experimental research activities in condensed matter physics at the University of Wuppertal and to develop them further.
  • A proactive collaboration with other research groups of experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics at the University of Wuppertal with respect to joint research projects and third-party funding acquisition is expected. This includes the participation in future joint projects, e.g., in succession of the previous Research Unit “Correlations in Integrable Quantum Many-Body Systems”. The use of existing research equipment for structure investigations, i.e., in-house x-ray sources as well as equipment for synchrotron radiation is desired. The same concerns a collaboration with the Wuppertal Center for Smart Materials & Systems CM@S.
  • The future holder of the position is expected to fully represent the field of experimental physics in teaching.
  • Teaching of undergraduate courses in experimental physics in German as well as the development and the realization of Physics Bachelor/Master courses in condensed matter physics is expected.
  • Contribution to the development of innovative teaching and learning concepts in the field of experimental physics.

Formal requirements

  • Completed degree (university or university of applied sciences) in Physics
  • A particular aptitude for scientific work, usually demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a respective doctorate
  • Suitability for teaching, which is proven by appropriate previous experience or demonstrated by excellent performance during the appointment procedure

You can demonstrate your visible profile that matches the above-mentioned expectations through your relevant research and initial publication activities (in particular articles in international peer-reviewed journals), experience in the acquisition of and participation in externally funded research projects as well as an international orientation (e.g. stays abroad, international collaboration, or international presentations at international conferences).

Tenure track:
Starting as junior professors, they are normally appointed as civil servants for a period of three years. These positions are extended for three more years if the junior professors have successfully passed an interim evaluation. After a positive tenure evaluation in the sixth year, the candidates are appointed associate professors (level W2, permanent position). Both evaluation procedures are based on a target agreement which is part of the appointment negotiations. The target agreement and a written confirmation verifying the negotiated financial and personal resources of the professorship are an integral part of the acceptance agreement between university and candidates.

Applications, including a letter of motivation, CV, research concept, teaching concept, copies of certificates, a list of publications and a list of previous teaching experiences, should be addressed to the Dean Univ.-Prof. Dr. Francesco Knechtli and solely submitted via the online portal of the University of Wuppertal until 28th October 2024: https://stellenausschreibungen.uni-wuppertal.de (reference code: P24010).

At the University of Wuppertal, we appreciate individual and cultural differences of our employees and support gender equality, equal opportunities, reconciliation of family and working life. Applications from persons of any gender and persons with disabilities are highly welcome. In accordance with the Gender Equality Act of North Rhine-Westphalia, women will be given preferential consideration unless there are compelling reasons in favour of an applicant who is not female. The same applies to applications from disabled persons, who will be given preference in the case of equal suitability.

Application deadline: 28th October 2024
