Open Ph.D. and PostDoc Positions (TVL-E13/100 %) in mixed-signal IC design and quantum technologies at the University of Stuttgart

The Institute of Smart Sensors at the University of Stuttgart is looking for candidates holding a Master’s (or equivalent) or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, physics, or related subjects interested in pursuing research as part of one of the following projects. All research projects are suitable for a Ph.D. thesis. The candidates should have a strong background in mixed-signal integrated circuit design or quantum technologies.

Integrated interface electronics for diamond-based quantum sensing

As part of the DFG research training group “GRK 2642: Towards Graduate Experts in Photonic Quantum Technologies” (https://www.pqe.uni-stuttgart.de/), we are looking for candidates with a strong background in mixed-signal integrated circuit design with the desire to strengthen their knowledge in quantum physics in a coordinated Ph.D. program and a stimulating interdisciplinary research environment. 

Integrated transceivers for SIC-based quantum sensing

The BMBF-Cluster4Future “QSens – Quantum sensors of the future” (https://www.clusters4future.de/die-zukunftscluster/qsens) is a large scale initiative between the Universities of Stuttgart and Ulm and 19 industrial partners. Apart from cluster-integrating measures, QSens consists of seven joint research projects. One of these research projects deals with the scalable manufacturing of quantum sensors based on silicon-vacancy centers (SiV centers) in silicon carbide. The Ph.D. student working at the Institute of Smart Sensors deals with chip-integrated microwave generation schemes as well as the chip-integrated low-noise readout of the electrical and optical responses of the sensor.

Integrated transceivers for in-situ EPR spectrometry

As part of the upcoming BMBF “Hydrospin – New catalysts for the efficient generation of hydrogen”, we are looking for candidates with a strong background in mixed-signal integrated circuit design who are willing to expand their horizon in a stimulating multidisciplinary research project with partners from chemistry, physics, and engineering. The Ph.D. student in Stuttgart will design an on-chip, in-situ EPR spectrometer in combination with a chip-integrated microwave heating for the EPR-based characterization of new catalysts.

Integrated millimeter-wave EPR transceivers

As part of the upcoming DFG priority program “INtegrated TERahErtz sySTems Enabling Novel Functionality (INTEREST)” (https://interest-thz.de/en/), we are looking for candidates with a strong background in mixed-signal integrated circuit design, ideally, with an emphasis on high-frequency electronics, who are willing to broaden their horizon towards the upcoming application of on-chip manipulation and detection of electron spins at very high frequencies up to 1 THz.

Integrated interface electronics for diamond-based quantum sensing

In collaboration with the 3rd Institute of Physics (Prof. Wrachtrup) and our industrial research partner Bosch, the IIS is launching a three-year research initiative towards the commercial use of quantum sensors based on NV centers in diamond. We are looking for candidates with a strong background in mixed-signal integrated circuit design and, ideally, also a good background in photonic engineering. The Ph.D. students in our group will design and characterize integrated interface electronics for scalable, miniaturized magnetic field sensors based on NV centers in diamond.

In addition to the above-listed projects, the Institute of Smart Sensors is continuously looking for excellent Ph.D. students and PostDocs in a variety of other topics and encourages candidates to apply.
