Seismic deformation demands are localized in areas of stiffness discontinuity, such as in soft-storeys of frame structures. This damage pattern is mitigated using strengthening schemes that include addition of stiffness in the structure so as to limit the magnitude of drift demands. This project aims to assess the use of masonry infills for the seismic upgrading of substandard reinforced concrete buildings. The in-plane and out-of-plane behaviour of the infill walls and their interaction with the load-bearing structure during response to seismic excitation will be assessed with the use of advanced computational models. Experimental work will be carried out to verify the findings of the analytical work.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in Civil Engineering. An MSc in Structural Engineering is required. Experience on structural engineering analysis software and laboratory testing would be advantageous.
If English is not candidate’s first language, he/she must provide evidence that he/she meets the University’s minimum English Language requirements.
Due to funding restrictions this position is only available for UK or EU candidates.
The position is available to start in December, February, April or June (subject to date of application)
This project will include the payment of tuition fees as well as a stipend equivalent to RCUK rates (currently at £15,009 p.a. tax free for 2019/20) awarded to the suitable candidate.
