a Senior Lecturer in Music Education, starting from 1st of February 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The position will be located in Jyväskylä, Finland.

 

Tasks and Qualifications

Music education at the University of Jyväskylä is an interdisciplinary field of study, emphasizing psychological and social perspectives on music. Research in this field focuses on music as social interaction, emotions, embodiment, cognitive skills, learning, and development. Teaching makes use of technology, research-based teaching, and collaboration with neighboring fields.

The position of Senior Lecturer involves research and teaching in the field, supervising doctoral dissertations and master's theses, and contributing to the development of the discipline at the University of Jyväskylä. The role emphasizes the teaching of quantitative research methods, thesis supervision, and participation in research projects. In addition, Senior Lecturer is expected to take an active role in planning new research projects and acquiring external research funding. The Senior Lecturer will initially work as part of the MUSICONNECT research project and the Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body, and Brain (MMBB).

The Senior Lecturer is required to have a relevant doctoral degree, demonstrated academic research through publications, experience in interdisciplinary research related to the topics of MMBB and MUSICONNECT projects, proficiency in quantitative research methods and experimental research designs, ability to operate at the intersection of scientific paradigms, and capability to provide high-quality, research-based teaching and thesis supervision. Additionally, the candidate's international networking and proven record in interdisciplinary collaboration will be considered as a merit in the assessment.

The tasks and qualification requirements for the Senior Lecturer are stipulated in the university's regulations and language proficiency guidelines. According to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009, Section 1), university teaching and research staff are required to master the language in which they teach, i.e. Finnish or Swedish. A university may grant exemption from this requirement. The primary language of instruction in this undergraduate program is Finnish, but the position also requires a good command of English.

The Senior Lecturer’s salary is situated on the job demands levels 6-7 according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. The monthly salary will be approximately 3950–5000 EUR (gross income, excluding holiday bonus) depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

A trial period of six months will be used at the beginning of the employment.
