The Chair of Applied Mechanics and Fluid Mechanics at the University of Bayreuth offers a three-year postdoctoral position in numerical fluid mechanics (full time, E 13 TV-L) to be filled as soon as possible.

Project Description:

The research project focuses on data assimilation of compressible high-speed flows using synthetic (numerical) or experimental data including Schlieren images, PIV data, and acoustic measurements. The research involves the development of a minimization algorithm based on the adjoint Navier-Stokes equations in order to adapt boundary and initial conditions to synthetic or experimental data. The implementation of the numerical data-assimilation for GPU is part of the project assignments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development of virtual observational models from DNS data.
  • Conducting an observability study of the virtual-model output.
  • Porting the data-assimilation code to GPU.
  • Data assimilation and DNS of compressible flows.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • PhD in fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, physics, or related field.
  • Experience in programming and numerical modeling.
  • Knowledge of compressible flows, stability analysis or adjoint equations.
  • Experience in GPU programming and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

What you can expect:

  • Interesting, varied work in a university environment.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Constructive working atmosphere in a friendly and open-minded team.
  • Company health management.
  • Compatibility of family and career.
