Dept: Mechanical Engineering

Starting from £34,304, rising to £40,927 per annum

Ref: CF9031

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath on an Innovate UK funded project (ASCEND: Advanced Sensing & Connectivity for Energy efficient Next-generation hydraulic Devices). The project is a close collaboration with industry (Domin Fluid Power and The Data Analysis Bureau) that aims to create a direct-drive servo valve platform with advanced integrated sensing to improve product efficiency and reliability.

The successful applicant will work closely with our industrial partners to identify novel compact sensing technologies for hydraulic systems, design and fabricate sensors for integration within additively manufactured servo-valve manifolds, and test their performance for real-time monitoring of valve pressure and temperature. Pressure-wave energy harvesting will also be investigated as a method to directly power sensors without the need for wired connections. The sensing technologies will be utilised by the industrial partners to create AI-enabled predictive maintenance (PdM) and remaining useful life (RUL) estimation tools.

An eager and creative candidate is sought to work on this Innovate UK project. The candidate should hold a PhD in mechanical engineering or a related discipline. Experience with sensors, additive manufacture and/or hydraulic systems is desired, as is the ability to work within an interdisciplinary team. The successful applicant will have excellent written and oral communication skills for effective communication of results and findings at regular project meetings with industrial partners, trade shows/conferences, and through academic publications.

The position is on a full-time basis (36.5 hours per week) for an expected duration of 30 months. For informal enquiries about the role please contact Dr James Roscow (jir24@bath.ac.uk) or Dr Min Pan (M.Pan@bath.ac.uk).

Closing date: 30 January 2022.

Interview date: 8 February 2022.
