The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of the synthesis and property testing of B,N-containing flame retardant candidates.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of experimental and applied organic chemistry within the Organic Synthesis (ORSY) division. Your research project will focus on synthesizing novel B,N-containing flame retardant candidates and evaluating their properties in pure form, as well as their performance in various polymer matrices.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the department of Chemistry.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Chemistry or Bio-Engineering with specialization chemistry. Students in the final year of their Master’s degree (graduation summer 2025) are encouraged to apply.
  • You can demonstrate good study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have experience in organic synthesis, the use of characterization methods for structural elucidation, and preparative purification techniques.
  • You are motivated by fundamental research with a potential societal impact.
  • You have a keen interest in the evaluation of polymer additives.
  • You can work independently and efficiently, as well as in a team.
  • You have a very good mastery of English and are an excellent communicator.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of one year. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another three years.
  • The planned start date is between May 2025 and September 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
