The Laboratory of Medical Biochemistry belongs to the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences and is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of medical biochemistry and protein science.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of protease biochemistry, more specifically the until now uncharacterized Thymus Specific Serine Protease (TSSP). This serine protease is highly expressed in the thymus and barely detected in other organs and is expected to play an important role in the functional T cell repertoire. This PhD project aims to obtain a better knowledge on the structure-function relationship and enzymatic activity of TSSP and will contribute to a better insight in the T-cell selection processes in the thymus.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Laboratory of Medical Biochemistry.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Master Drug Development), Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Biology or Bio-engineering or you will have obtained it by the time you start to work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You are interested in a PhD in basic science.
  • You have a particular interest in experimental work. Experience with protein expression and/or purification is an advantage.
  • You are willing to compete for competitive funding on the project and personal scholarships.
  • You are a team player and have excellent communication skills.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 October 2024  or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
