Located in the heart of Europe, in a dynamic area, the Brussels School of Engineering offers a multicultural, friendly and green working environment. In partnership with the Bioengineering Schools, it offers no less than three bachelor, 11 master, advanced master and two doctoral programmes. Each year, more than 200 civil engineers and bioengineers are graduating and able of playing an active, responsible and critical role as citizens in a changing world. Involved at the local, regional and international levels, the School actively contributes to the progress and well-being of society through applied and fundamental research at the highest level.
The position is open within the BATir department, a unique multidisciplinary and comprehensive engineering department in Belgium of Built Environment, from soils and rocks to materials and structures, from responsible architecture to sustainable urbanism, from engineering to architectural sciences; with modelling, experimental and/or design perspectives.
BATir is offering several educational or training programmes: BSc in Architectural Engineering (in French); the joint BRUFACE MSc in ‘Architectural Engineering’ and ‘Civil Engineering’; the Advanced Master in Transition Urbanism (in French and English); the Master in Urban Studies (in English), the Executive Master in Large Construction Project Management (collaboration with ADEB/VBA and VUB) and the PhD’s in ‘Engineering and Technology’ and ‘Architecture and Urbanism’.
BATir is composed of 5 research units: Civil Engineering Laboratory (LGC), Laboratory of GeoMechanics (LGM), Structural and Material Computational mechanics research unit (SMC), Architectural Engineering research unit (AIA), Institute for Urban Design and Regional Planning (SUFI).
BATir is very active and regularly involved in research projects funded by H2020 (Marie Curie, COST), FEDER, Erasmus+ (Erasmus Mundus), FNRS (including 2 EOS, 2 Starting Grants MIS and PDR), InnovIris, Walloon Region and others. BATir is also hosting the Belgian Association of Major Construction Contractors ADEB/VBA Chair which supports seed grants to start research projects and the Innoviris Chair in Circular Economy.
BATir is composed of more than 100 people with 11 Faculty members, 14 part-time lecturers, post-doctoral fellows, PhD students, part-time teaching assistants, lab technicians, administrative officers and many industrial or scientific external collaborators.

Description of the research & teaching assistant position
The candidate will also take part in educational activities (architectural studios, tutorials, projects, master’s thesis and pedagogical coordination) in the Bachelor and Master’s programme in architectural engineering of the Brussels School of Engineering.
The candidate will be expected to conduct high-quality research, leading to a PhD degree, in the field of architectural engineering in a broad sense. The topic of the research will be finalised jointly with the candidate and the supervisor.
The teaching and research tasks will be balanced and regularly revised.
A research and teaching assistant position is granted for a first term of two years, renewable for up to 2 further periods of 2 years (full time) subjected to review and approval.
The position is open to graduates in architectural engineering or architecture (or equivalent), complying with the enrolment conditions to the PhD programme in Architecture and Urbanism.
Students who are about to graduate during the 2024 summer are encouraged to apply, on the condition that they have relevant and demonstrated professional experience in architectural practice, design or architectural engineering.
Beyond the expected skills and competencies expected from an architectural engineer or an architect, the candidate will show research interest, in particular in architectural engineering, architecture or urbanism. A professional experience with a company and/or architectural or engineering office will be appreciated.

The teaching workload will be regularly revised and contain tutorials, projects, studios or thesis related to the following modules:
ARCH-H100 Projet d'architecture I (in French) and/or
ARCH-H200 Projet d'architecture II (in French) and/or
ARCH-H300 Projet d'architecture III (in French) and/or
involvement in other theoretical courses according to the candidates' skills and knowledge;
Co-organization of the yearly study trip for the students in the Bachelor architectural engineering (all 3 years).
