FACULTY OF SCIENCES
Reference : 2021/A081
Application deadline: September 30, 2021
Start date: February 1, 2022
The Department of Molecular Biology (DBM) of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) has a long tradition of scientific excellence in multiple fields encompassing molecular biology, microbiology, structural biology, cell and developmental biology, genetics, and immunology. It runs competitive research projects, including several active ERC research programs, in a highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary spirit.
Located at the heart of the Brussels South Charleroi Biopark, a vivid and rapidly growing environment dedicated to Life sciences, the Department is part of a large and vibrant community embodied by more than 150 academic researchers and ~ 1500 biotech employees working in no less than 50 biotech start-up companies.
The Department benefits from privileged access to the EU-funded imaging capacities of the CMMI (Center for Microscopy and Molecular Imaging), that provides imaging capacities all the way from molecular structures (cryo-EM SPA) up to organism-wide MRI, optical, µCT, PET and SPECT imaging, in addition to scanning and transmission electron microscopy, laser-scanning and spinning-disk confocal imaging. The technological platforms include up-to-date animal housing (Drosophila, Xenopus, zebrafish and mouse), flow cytometry, and single-cell transcriptomics.
The Department of Molecular Biology (DBM) of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) invites applications for a full-time tenured faculty position to join its multi-disciplinary research and teaching team, starting on 01/02/2022. We are looking for a driven and collaborative candidate at Associate Professor level with an internationally competitive scientific track-record and an innovative research program.
Duties and responsibilities :
The appointee will run his own independent research group, ideally in close collaboration with one or more existing laboratories of the Department (http://www.ulb.ac.be/sciences/dbm/). Her/His task will be to develop a high-quality research program, which implies applications to the most competitive national and international funding programs (ERC, Welbio, NIH, FNRS-MIS, etc.).
The applicant shall show strong motivation and abilities with respect to teaching and mentoring. She/He will contribute to the teaching activities in a wide range of aspects of cellular and molecular biology and biochemistry in the Bachelor and Master programs by ensuring both basic and specialty courses. She/He should progressively increase her/his teaching activities to reach a level comparable to that of colleagues within the Faculty and the Department. Mentoring of undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral researchers is also expected. For candidates not fluent in French, a temporary period of teaching in English may be granted for 3 years, after which she/he is expected to be able to teach in French.
More specifically, the applicant will be expected (i) to teach a course of Molecular and cellular Biology at the Bachelor level (S-BIOG-923, 5 ECTS, ~40 hours of theory), (ii) to teach a course of his scientific discipline at the Master’s level (~24 hours of theory), (iii) to coordinate a Master’s internship program (TRAN-F503), and (iv), to organize a workshop at the Master’s level in his scientific discipline (24 h).
PhD Degree (with doctoral thesis) in biological sciences, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, or any related discipline.
