The selected applicant will be hired as full-time Teaching Assistant. He/She will contribute to the teaching of the department’s BSc Earth Science program and carry out a PhD research project within the ‘Biogeochemistry and Modelling of the Earth System’ (BGEOSYS) group of the Department Geosciences, Environment & Society (DGES).
The specific topic of the PhD research project will be defined in close collaboration with the selected applicant and according to the applicant’s interests. In general, however, the research topic will fall in the broad research field ‘Global Carbon Cycling and (Paleo)Climate’ and will focus on the modeling of global biogeochemical cycles that control the exchanges of carbon within the Earth system, with a particular focus on the land-(ice)-ocean and/or ocean/sediment interface. Currently, ongoing research within BGeosys prioritizes on an improved, interdisciplinary understanding of the physical, biogeochemical and geomicrobial processes that govern transformations and fluxes at these interfaces to better understand the evolution of the coupled carbon cycle-climate system, both in the past and in the future.
The applicant will hold a BSc degree in Geology and MSc degree in Geosciences. He/she will have a strong background in sedimentology and biogeochemistry, as well as a quantitative mindset. Previous experience in modelling and numerical methods, as well as additional expertise in geomicrobiology, oceanography/hydrodynamics is a plus. The applicants will have a good command of spoken as well as written French and English. They will have an affinity with teaching and will show a promise to develop a successful research track record. In addition, they will have strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
