The Unit of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Faculty of Social Sciences , Tampere University, is a multidisciplinary and international health education and research unit. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate education in nursing science and public health science programs in both Finnish and English. Each year, nearly 100 master's degrees and almost 20 doctoral degrees are awarded from our unit. The unit's largest research areas include health behavior and health promotion (especially from the perspectives of children, youth, and families), aging and the aging population, disease prevention and control, as well as health policy and healthcare systems. The Unit of Health Sciences is a World Health Organization collaborating center, and our researchers are active in several Tampere University research centers. Our teaching and research in nursing science and public health science are strengthened by strong expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, gerontology, global health, social psychiatry, social and health policy, health sociology, and health economics. 

Nursing science research and education support the goals of the Faculty of Social Sciences, such as the aim to identify, understand, and address well-being challenges and related issues. In line with the faculty's research policies, nursing science also combines strong disciplinary expertise with interdisciplinary research and education that is open to new approaches. 

In nursing science, education is provided in the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in health sciences as well as in the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences. In the Master's studies, it is possible to deepen expertise in the teaching or management study tracks 

We are inviting applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor in nursing science

Job description  

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished academic and teacher to conduct, organize and supervise scientific research, develop nursing science as a multidisciplinary field, participate in public engagement, practice international collaboration, and conduct research-based teaching. The position requires an ability to participate in multidisciplinary collaboration. 

Requirements  

Professor 
We require:  

  • an applicable doctoral degree  
  • high level of scholarly expertise  
  • experience in leading scientific research  
  • an ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction  
  • a track record of winning external research funding  
  • a track record of international scholarly activity  

Considered an advantage: 

  • Doctoral degree in nursing science 
  • Demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary/cross-disciplinary approaches 
  • Research and teaching experience on healthcare management, particularly on nursing management  

Associate Professor  
We require:  

  • an applicable doctoral degree  
  • a track record of independent scholarly activity    
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position  
  • an ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding 
  • a track record of international scholarly activity

Considered an advantage: 

  • Doctoral degree in nursing science  
  • Demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary/cross-disciplinary approaches 
  • Research and teaching experience on healthcare management, particularly on nursing management  

In assessing qualifications, consideration will also be given to the applicant's suitability with the strategy of Tampere University, the faculty, and the unit, as well as their experience in leading scientific research or active involvement in a research group, corresponding to their career stage. Successful performance in the position requires fluency in both Finnish and English. 

The most qualified candidates will also undergo a review by external experts and during the interview process, a presentation of the research activities may be requested.

Tampere University and the higher education community offer a unique multidisciplinary environment for interdisciplinary research and teaching. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides natural opportunities for collaboration between health sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The position starts 1 January 2025 or based on an agreement. 

Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset.   

Initial appointment for associate professor is for five years and subject to successful performance. Successful completion of the fixed-term Assistant or Associate Professor post will lead to an indefinite appointment. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to Faculty positions.  

A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.  

Salaries are based on the job demands and on employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The minimum starting salary of an associate professor will range between 5000 – 5800 € per month and the salary of a professor between 6000-7000 € per month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.
