Faculty of Social Sciences in the Tampere University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a fixed term of up to 3 years, starting as of 1 March 2022.
The project “Coexistence and conflict in the age of complexity: an interdisciplinary study of community dynamics” (EmergentCommunity) at the Tampere University will run from January 2021 to December 2025 (for more information, see: https://societalsustainability.fi/emergentcommunity/; https://www.tuni.fi/en/research/coexistence-and-conflict-age-complexity-emergentcommunity). The project is funded by European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant 2020) and led by university researcher Eeva Puumala.
EmergentCommunity provides a multi-method and multi-level analysis of community relations in socially mixed urban neighbourhoods in Finland, France, and Sweden. The project builds on ethnographic fieldwork on everyday relations and community dynamics, after which it moves to deepen ethnographic understanding with the study of how people perceive and orient to diversity and its consequences and respond to them affectively. Overall, the project generates knowledge about the development of everyday relations and community dynamics in times of increasing diversification that is often accompanied with segregation and polarisation in the urban space.
The project EmergentCommunity is hosted at the Tampere Peace Research Institute, Faculty of Social Sciences, Tampere University. The faculty is also a home to the Human Information Processing Laboratory (HIP, https://research.tuni.fi/hiplab/) with which the selected candidate can network and collaborate. The Tampere University is an internationally renowned research-led university and one of the few in the world to specialize in social sciences (more information on Finland and Tampere).
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will study affective reactions and orientation and their connection to the development of emotional experience and behavioural observations. Together with the research team, the selected candidate will reflect on the connections between affective orientations and subjective processes of meaning-making. For the study, participants’ physiological responses will be measured, and eye-tracking will be done while they are viewing 360-degree videos that are based on ethnographic data. The environments will depict mundane urban environments and their social dynamic.
The selected candidate can participate in the conceptualization of the 360-degree videos and influence the focus of data collection regarding their own field. In addition, the selected candidate can determine the emphasis of their own research within the scientific scope of the EmergentCommunity project.
The selected candidate is involved in collecting data in all three countries. Data collection will be carried out in collaboration with the multidisciplinary research team in a way that the selected candidate can focus on deepening their expertise in their own field.
The Postdoctoral Researcher Fellow’s duties include data gathering and analysis, high level academic publishing, participation in regular team meetings and presenting research at seminars and academic conferences. A successful candidate is expected to show interest and enthusiasm towards working in an interdisciplinary team, while representing their own discipline.
The selected candidate must hold a PhD degree in a relevant field. A successful candidate is expected to have research experience in studying affective responses, in measuring and analyzing physiological responses (skin conductance, heart rate) and in eye tracking.
The selected candidate must have the ability to conduct independent, high-quality scientific research. The candidate should have excellent analytical and methodological skills and be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
The position requires excellent skills in written and oral English. A command of French, Finnish or Swedish is considered an asset.
Salary and probationary period
The salary of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be paid according to the personal performance, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. At commencement, the monthly salary will typically range between 3100–3550 €. The post is subject to a six-month probationary period.
