The main research topic of the Chair of Hydraulic Fluid Machinery (HSM) is the development of customised CFD methods for the numerical simulation of multiphase flow in fluid machinery and their components. Application examples cover rotating and displacement machinery, injection systems and basic investigations. We focus on the customised development of numerical schemes and physical models, for example for the computation of cavitation, multiphase and multispecies fluid flow, jet break-up, bubble dynamics and turbulence. Thereby, a bridge is built from basic and methodological research to industrial research and applications on machinery.

Your tasks

  • Development of compressible, shock-resolving 3D simulation methods (CFD) for cavitating and turbulent flow
  • Self-dependent customization of OpenFOAM
  • Independent enhancement of cavitation and turbulence models
  • Simulation of entire pumping systems, embedding 3D solvers in 1D solvers
  • Development of 3D-1D coupling methods
  • Turbulence scale resolving or adapting simulations
  • Simulation of complex geometries at high Reynolds numbers
  • High-Performance-Computing (HPC) / porting and application on large-capacity computers
  • Writing of scientific papers
  • Support of teaching, in English or German
  • Close cooperation with industry and other universities

Your profile

  • PhD / Dr. rer. nat. / Dr.-Ing. Degree in mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, applied mathematics or a related discipline
  • Strong academic track record, evidence by publication list
  • Evident CFD developer skills, development of complex program systems
  • Experience with algorithms for finite volume schemes and Navier-Stokes equations
  • Teaching experience is advantageous
  • Advanced programming skills, Ideally C++
  • Proactivity, ambition and purposefulness
  • Strong communication skills, spoken and written
  • German language skills or willingness
  • Enjoying teamwork

Our offerings

  • Support from and cooperation with competent colleagues
  • Team-orientated cooperation in a committed, international and appreciative team
  • Employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the University Alliance Ruhr
  • Options for flexible working
