Job Summary

We are offering two posts of Senior Research Fellow or Research Fellow in Smart Data Technologies. Appointments will be decided on the academic quality and potential of the candidates.

These posts are intended to support the research work of the Smart Data Technologies Centre, which applies novel data science and artificial intelligence research to challenging real-world problems.

We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in the following areas:
Evolutionary algorithms, fuzzy logic or neural networks.
Machine learning and time series modelling.
Probabilistic modelling and prediction.
Machine vision and deep learning.
Discrete event simulation and dynamic simulation.

Our research has a strong focus on robust real-world application and so a flexible skill set and a willingness to engage with industry are key requirements of the roles. Experience in industrially-applied research is desirable but not essential.

The School has internationally recognised research pushing the boundaries of theoretical and practical knowledge in Computing Science. We have long-standing research strength in Computational Intelligence, Case-Based Reasoning and Data Mining with growing expertise in Usability and Human Factors.

The Smart Data Technologies Centre, hosted by the School, focusses on industrially – applied data science, optimisation and machine learning. Major application areas include: planning and supply chain optimisation; predictive and preventive maintenance; process control and operations management. Smart Data is a strategic priority research area for the university, and we engage in interdisciplinary research with other Schools, most notably Engineering (predictive maintenance) and Architecture (smart cities).

The Centre attracts direct funding from industry as well as public funding from RCUK, Horizon 2020, and from Scottish Innovation Centres, such as The Data Lab, OGIC and CENSIS. RGU hosts the Aberdeen hub of The Data Lab Innovation Centre, which is co-located with the School. The School is a member of the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), which pools world-leading research in Computing Science from Scottish Universities.

Salary on appointment will be at a point on Grade 7 or Grade 8 appropriate to experience. Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the appropriate scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

This post is subject to a Disclosure Scotland check. For more information visit: https://www.mygov.scot/standard-disclosure

We would particularly welcome applications from women as they are under-represented in this area of our workforce.

Closing Date: 26 August 2018

While a good cover letter makes an explicit connection between how your past experience will help you succeed in the postdoc position, a great cover letter sparks the PI’s interest and ensures they read your CV.

How many times have you been asked, “What do you research?” only to draw a complete blank or ramble on for minutes? Situations like these are why you need an elevator pitch.
