The Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research (IPF) – a member of the Leibniz Association – is one of the largest polymer research institutes in Germany, where polymer material research is covered by polymer synthesis and processing as well as characterization, theory, and simulation. As a TU Dresden Young Investigator group at IPF, the ThieleLab goes beyond existing functional material classes to address the urgent demand for highly integrated, multifunctional, responsive systems for sensing, information processing, soft robotics or multi-parametric implants. Along these lines, we aim at establishing a radically new approach for polymer material design, rethinking additive manufacturing on both material and process level in the upcoming ERC Starting Grant project “3DPartForm: 3D-printing of particulate formulations utilizing polymer microparticle-based voxels”. The successful candidate will join a cutting-edge research project funded by the prestigious ERC grant scheme. Its goal is to address the current lack of additive manufacturing providing multifunctional, stimuli-responsive materials, in which not only strongly different, but most importantly functional building blocks with intrinsic time axis will be processed into true
4D-polymer multimaterials. The postdoc position is devoted to provide large-scale access to exactly these building blocks by microfluidics. In a holistic approach, the postdoc will target novel microfluidic approaches for high-throughput formation of tailored microemulsions, synthesize necessary functional amphiphiles for emulsion stabilization, and utilize these for processing pre-polymer solutions into defined building blocks for additive manufacturing.
To tackle these challenges, the successful candidate is trained in polymer chemistry or chemical engineering; high-resolution additive manufacturing (particularly micro- stereolithography) is a plus.
The desire to path new ways in how polymer materials are made, to work across disciplines and discuss results with collaborators from other fields is essential.
Starting date: 01.04.2020 contract for 1 year with the possibility of extension
Salary: According to German pay grade TV‐L EG 13
