The Rock & Geomechanics (RockGem) research group at KAUST, Saudi Arabia investigates (geo-) mechanical behaviors of fractured reservoir rocks (both carbonates and clastics) under drilling, completion, and production conditions and explores how these factors impact reservoir fluid flow and production. Results from our research activities – conducted mainly in our state-of-the-art rock mechanics laboratory and in the field provide disruptive insights into the constitutive behavior of rocks and associated fluid flow models. We also map regional, plate-scale in situ stress patterns – with emphasis on the Arabian plate using advanced numerical and analytical methods and calibrate these with available field data.
The group is also highly involved in research related to the Circular Carbon Economy (CCE), and produces in-depth studies on renewable energies that incorporate carbon sequestration and utilization, storage, and geothermal solutions.
