The “Chromatin Biochemistry” laboratory of Prof. Wolfgang Fischle at KAUST invites applications for a Postdoc position in “Bioinformatics of Epigenetics and Chromatin Structure”.
Our research team is aiming to understand the molecular principles of epigenetic regulation that are embedded in the organization of cellular chromatin. In particular, we want to find out how chromatin structure impacts on the way the genome is used and what role post-translational modifications of histone proteins and methylation of DNA play in this process. For this, we are using highly interdisciplinary approaches combining classical biochemistry and molecular biology with systems biology methods. We are working with different experimental model systems (C. elegans; mouse and human cell lines) and in the context of different disease applications.
The research team is very diverse in background and nationalities and provides a highly stimulating working environment. We now seek a dynamic new colleague who has the ability and drive to strengthen our computational biology efforts.
The successful candidate is expected to apply existing and to develop new algorithms and data analysis pipelines for evaluating ensemble and single cell RNAseq, ChIP-seq, HiC and related experiments based on next generation sequencing. S/he will interface with experimentalists in the research team to address scientific questions at the frontier of biological research. Besides strong input and support of existing projects, the bioinformatician/computational biologist will develop new lines of independent investigation on the basis of hypothesis driven research. General responsibilities include setting up and maintaining the interface between the research group and the IT and supercomputing departments at KAUST, management of different databases and server shares, implementation of different algorithms and programs, setting up and executing collaborations with bioinformatics and computational biology laboratories on site.
Individuals must be able to work in a team and possess excellent communication skills. We expect high motivation, the ability to meet deadlines in a goal-oriented environment and the talent to organize personal and group work flows. Candidates must be accustomed to working under pressure and to contribute to scientific problem solving. High proficiency in English language is a must.
Applicants should hold a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology or have adequate educational and scientific training. We are seeking candidates who have a strong background in informatics paired with high interest in solving biological problems. Scholars must have the skills and drive to develop new projects and to build fruitful interfaces with ongoing studies. Scientists with high motivation for basic research as well as the ability and desire to work independently in a multidisciplinary and international research environment are encouraged to apply.
