Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease worldwide, and develops in the context of obesity and metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. The prevalence is also rapidly increasing in children and adolescents. Despite intensive medical research, a satisfactory treatment for NAFLD is not yet available, except for lifestyle interventions.
We are recruiting a motivated PhD student who will perform research into the mechanisms involved in the progression of liver fibrosis in NAFLD.
This builds upon previous work in our lab, and focuses specifically on the role of metabolic factors in the activation of hepatic stellate cells, which contribute to liver fibrosis via production of collagen. This study relies on a combination of mouse models for adult and pediatric NAFLD, in vitro experiments and a translation section via human samples. Techniques used for data analysis include histology, immunohistochemistry, RNA sequencing, qPCR, ELISA, cell isolation and flow cytometry.
We offer a position for 1 year, which can be extended 3 to 4 years in case of positive evaluations. The student will also apply for a FWO/BOF (local) scholarship. He/she will be able to work in a stimulating environment, will be taught the necessary techniques and will be mentored throughout the project. The intended aim is to obtain a PhD in Medical/Biomedical Sciences.
Applicants should send their motivation letter, professional resume (CV), overview of study results and, if applicable, contact details of academic referees, to prof. dr. Anja Geerts (firstname.lastname@example.org) and dr. Sander Lefere (email@example.com) before October 1, 2020.
After an initial screening and selection based on CV and motivation letter, interviews will take place.
Anticipated starting date: November 1, 2020.Continue reading
