German Institute of Human Nutrition
is a member of the Leibniz Association. The institute’s mission is to conduct experimental and clinical research in the field of nutrition and health, with the aim of understanding the molecular basis of nutrition-dependent diseases, and of developing new strategies for treatment and prevention (Website: http://www.dife.de/?lang=en).
We invite applications for the newly founded Junior Research Group Muscle Physiology and Metabolism (MPM) for
starting on 01.01.2021.
The PhD candidate will investigate a novel exercise-responsive signaling enzyme, which we identified using proteomic analyses in human and mouse skeletal muscle. This enzyme is highly expressed in skeletal muscle, regulated by different types of exercises in humans, and, intriguingly its overexpression is sufficient to increase muscle glucose uptake. We have generated muscle-specific knockout mice to investigate what this enzyme signals to and whether it is necessary for muscle glucose uptake during insulin-stimulation, exercise and muscle contractions both in vivo and ex vivo. In addition, we want to understand the role of this enzyme in insulin resistance, exercise training and the loss of skeletal muscle mass/strength that typically occur with aging. Under this umbrella, the PhD candidate will:
