Job description

Are you eager to establish your own independent research group in the field of multiscale materials modelling and computational materials science? Do you have the ambition to tackle complex challenges in materials and interface design? Contribute to societal challenges? And do that at a place that houses world-class fundamental research and sits in the heart of Europe's premier high-tech region for information technology? At the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e) we offer a vibrant, inclusive and inspiring place to work. Apply now and join our dynamic, inclusive and innovative research environment!

Job Description

We are looking for applicants for an Assistant Professor position in the field of computational physics, chemistry and materials simulation and modelling. We are interested in individuals who can expand our existing expertise, spanning from quantum mechanics to classical methods, and research activities from the atomistic to macroscale, effectively bridging these scales to build a comprehensive multiscale modelling capability. You, for example, potentially revolutionize renewable energy and green technology.

This role is part of the Materials Simulation and Modelling (MSM) research unit within the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education (APSE) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). TU/e and the Eindhoven region are recognized hubs for scientific and industrial innovation in information technology, with materials design and innovation being one of the most crucial focus areas.

To support you, we provide you with a startup package and access to state-of-the-art research facilities such as a high-performance computing cluster. We offer a dedicated mentoring scheme, and free access to a broad portfolio of training programs for personal development and academic leadership. The TU/e also offers a stimulating environment for collaborations with other research units, multidisciplinary institutes and initiative, departments, and industry.

As an Assistant Professor, you will have the opportunity to lead your own research group independently, including securing funding and supervising students at the bachelor, master, and PhD levels. At the same time, you will benefit from the resources and collaborative environment of a larger research unit and an open, collegial department. You will also be expected to participate in and contribute to the development of the Applied Physics bachelor's and master's teaching programs.

Job requirements

  • PhD in computational physics, computational chemistry or materials science, and at least two years of research experience.
  • A background in combining quantum mechanical and classical methods applied to complex materials and interfaces.
  • Proven ability to conduct high-quality academic research, reflected in a relevant PhD thesis and other demonstrable outputs.
  • Demonstrated teaching ability, with experience in teaching or assisting in teaching and a well-developed vision of teaching and learning within your discipline.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team. A well-established international network with academic researchers and industry partners is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract competitive research funding from national and international funding bodies or industry partners is an asset.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills, including experience in coaching and mentoring students and young researchers.
  • Excellent proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

Join us in pushing the boundaries of materials science and contribute to the cutting edge of research and education at TU/e. Apply today!

Conditions of employment

We offer a meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station and city center. In addition, we offer you:

  • A development track with the prospect of becoming Associate Professor and the possibility of an immediate tenured position.
  • A tailor-made start-up package to kickstart your career.
  • Female Assistant Professors starting within our department are entitled to join the Irene Curie Program, which includes a substantial, additional, start-up package.
  • Free access to high-quality training programs for academic leadership, the university teaching qualification program, research and valorization competences, and a dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch (research) environment.
  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as the partner career support program to support accompanying partners, an international spouse program and sports facilities.
  • The opportunity to focus your career on research, teaching, or impact. You can develop your personal ambitions within the strategic objectives of the university.
  • A gross monthly salary of min. € 4537,- and max. € 7056,- (scale 11 and scale 12) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, and - depending on your personal situation - a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility).
  • Possibility for part time employment starting at 0.8 fte.
