WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) division, at the Institute for Earth System Predictions (IESP) is seeking a talented Junior software developer applied to scientific data management focuses on research and development in the field of scientific computing applied to climate and environmental applications.
The ASC division is looking for talented and enthusiastic people to join a dynamic working environment. Specifically, the Junior Software developer, will be in charge of the development of data management solutions for handling large and heterogenous climate/environmental data sources, involved the implementation of AI-driven algorithms, the implementation of dashboards included in Decision Support Systems and a mobile App for fleet management and forest health monitoring.

ROLE
The Junior Software developer is responsible for the development of data management solutions for handling large and heterogenous climate/environmental data sources, including the implementation of AI-driven algorithms, dashboards for Decision Support Systems and mobile Apps for fleet management and forest health monitoring.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Junior Software developer will support the ASC Division, with the following activities:

  •  WP2   AI algorithms for predicting and fighting natural hazards
    • A 2.1   AI-enabled modeling of natural hazards
    • A 2.2   AI core data processing workflows
    • A 2.3   Test and validation of the AI models
  • WP3 Big data platform & Decision Support System
    • A 3.1   Big data platform design and implementation
    • A 3.2   Decision Support System design and implementation
    • A 3.3   Test and validation of the operational platform

REQUIREMENTS

  • M.Sc. degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or equivalent fields;
  • 2+ years’ experience in scientific software development;
  • Proven experience in programming with Python and knowledge of Python scientific libraries and tools (i.e., numpy, pandas, Jupyter notebooks);
  • Experience with platforms and frameworks for building web applications such as Django, Angular, React, Flutter, etc;
  • Experience with the design and management of relational and not relational databases (i.e., MySQL, MongoDB, etc.);
  • Experience with version control system tools (i.e., Git/GitHub);
  • Experience with Linux environment;
  • Flexibility to work on a diverse range of tasks and to manage deadlines;
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Experience on SDK Android and Xcode for IoS;
  • Experience with the development of algorithms and software tools to process data acquired by drones, video cameras and satellite images;
  • Knowledge of Object-Oriented design and programming;
  • Knowledge of domain-specific Python libraries (e.g., xarray, cartopy);
  • Experience in handling large datasets;
  • Experience with containerization software (i.e., Docker);
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • The appointment period will be initially of 12 months starting from November 2024, with the possibility of contract extension pending positive evaluation. Tenure can be granted from 3 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher;
  • The gross annual salary range is from 28 to 36K Euros, depending on qualification and working experience;
  • Welfare package;
  • Flexible working time;
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.
Some fiscal benefits could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).
