(legal basis: W 1 LBesG NRW; § 36 HG NRW).
The position will be based in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science within the School of Mathematics and Natural Science. It is to be taken up by 1st of October, 2020.
This professorship is funded by the “Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses”, a tenure track program by the German Federal Government in cooperation with the Federal States of Germany.
The junior professorship is embedded in a scientifically active and stimulating environment with existing specializations in discrete, discrete-continuous and multi-objective optimization.
We are looking for an excellent scientist in an early stage of her*his career, who is working in the area of continuous optimization. Examples include nonlinear optimization, optimization with differential equations, or optimal control. The research field of the candidate should link to the thematic focuses of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, especially to those of the Institute for Modelling, Analysis and Computational Mathematics (IMACM) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Machine Learning and Data Analytics (IZMD). During the period of the junior professorship we expect the candidate to acquire further outstanding academic achievements, to be successful in applying for external research funding and to excel in teaching. The University’s human resources department supports the successful candidate’s professional and personal development, including career counseling, acquisition of research funds, teaching excellence and personnel management.
Teaching takes place in the mathematics and computer science programmes of the department and includes courses for non-mathematicians in other programmes. Once appointed the permanent W2 professorship, we expect the candidate to represent mathematics, in particular optimization, with a high level of commitment across the board in research and teaching in all of the department's degree programmes and its service courses.
Engagement in academic self-administration is taken for granted.
The University considers gender equality as an important task, and the successful candidate will contribute to its implementation.
As a rule, junior professors are appointed as temporary civil servants for a period of three years. Their position is extended for a further three years if they have proven themselves in an interim evaluation. Consequent to a positive tenure evaluation in the sixth year, the junior professor will be tenured as an associate professor (W2, permanent position). Both evaluation procedures are based on a target agreement which is part of the appointment negotiations. The target agreement as well as a confirmation of the resources available to the professorship, are an integral part of the appointment agreement between university and candidate.
