PhD scholarship in Computational Fluid Dynamics at the University of Louvain in Belgium

A PhD scholarship in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is available at the University of Louvain (UCL) in Belgium. The topic of the proposed research concerns the numerical study of turbulent reacting multiphase flows. More specifically, it focuses on the modelling and simulation of the injection and combustion processes of bio-fuels in internal combustion engines. The PhD student will work as a member of the multi-phase and reacting flows group at the University of Louvain. Information about our group's activities is available on our website (https://sites.google.com/site/mvpapalexandris/). The envisaged starting date is September 1st 2017.

The proposed research is part of an international ERA-NET project under the HORIZON2020 programme of the European Commission. The broader objective of this ERA-NET project is to reduce the carbon footprint by advancing the state-of-the-art on sustainable alternative energies. This involves higher efficiencies and lower emissions for biofuel combustion.

The proposed doctoral research project consists of:

i) full-scale modelling of the flow-field inside the engine, including fuel injection and combustion,

ii) numerical simulations in parallel computers and validation of the numerical results with experimental data from the engine test bench, and

iv) identification of potential ways to improve the efficiency of the overall process.

Desired qualifications and experience:

  • a Masters degree in a relevant engineering discipline, physics or mathematics, preferably with a background in fluid mechanics, combustion and numerical methods for scientific computing,
  • good programming skills in C/C++ and/or FORTRAN95,
  • ability to communicate, read and write in English.

The scholarship includes the researcher's salary, full insurance and health benefits, full coverage of expenses for participation in conferences & workshops, and full coverage of short-term visits to the participating partners.
